Click on images to enlarge A professional saw cutter cuts ¼-inch wide and 1 to 1½-inch deep grooves. Backer rod, a foam filler, is stuffed in the grooves to take up space between the heating cable and sealant. The heat cable is spliced to the cold lead, which connects to the control unit. Grooves ½ to 1-inch wide are cut in the garage to run the cold lead to the control units. Gray concrete sealant is used in the garage to cover the cold leads. Two control units control the snow melting systems - 240V 30-amp breakers are required to power each zone. An aerial mounted snow switch is used to automatically turn on the snow melting systems when there is moisture in the air and the temperature is near freezing. Blacktop sealant is used to seal the asphalt driveway and gray concrete sealant is used for the sidewalks and in the garage.
